On September 10, 2022 Ubisoft had a major reveal about the Assassin’s Creed franchise. This included the launch of five new upcoming games led by Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Other products include open-world RPG Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, a multiplayer hub going by Assassin’s Creed Codename Infinity, and a mobile game Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade. Ubisoft also confirmed a partnership with Netflix to develop an Assassin’s Creed live-action series and games for Netflix.
Analysis
Assassin’s Creed is a powerhouse franchise that seems like it could do well with live service and metaverse trends. In its own release, Netflix announced they were working with Ubisoft on 3 mobile games based around not only Assassin’s Creed but valiant Hearts and Mighty Quest.
In reporting Q1 results for fiscal 2023, Ubisoft announced a “new high-value mobile partnership for one of our brands.” Presumably the company was referring to the just-announced Netflix partnership.
Overall, it will be great to have a major new Assassin’s Creed game with Mirage. However, as with all Ubisoft projects the rest of the development projects must be taken with a grain of salt. Ubisoft is known for biting off more than it can chew. Ubisoft also has a track record of picking dubious partners like Google’s underperforming Stadia streaming service. Netflix is a newcomer to games that is likely to struggle to make an impact.
Nevertheless, Ubisoft has some great IP that has significant growth potential with the right execution.
