JULY 8, 2011 • Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe feature films, is part of a team that has optioned the film rights to the Space Invaders arcade game, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Impact: This one has us massaging our foreheads in wonderment. Space Invaders may be ranked the most popular arcade title ever by Guinness World Records, but there is literally no back story to exploit here to fuel an action flick. Button mashing and sound effects are our primary memories of the game. The sole reason for the option is likely to acquire rights to the title. Somehow we don’t see di Bonaventura pushing a sweet period piece in the Spielberg mold about 1980s youngsters who are forced to give up the arcade to respond to a real alien invasion in their small suburb.
