NOV. 13, 2009 • Six Degrees Games, Inc. raised $7 million in equity financing, with Time Warner Inc. investing along with current investors including Clearstone Venture Partners and Prism Venture Works. Six Degrees is known for publishing online sports entertainment including the tween and teen sports site ActionAllStars.com. The additional funding will used to expand development capabilities. In other financing news, social gaming company Playdom raised $43 million in Series A funding to finance strategic acquisitions and expand the company’s slate of games.
Impact: As online games start to expand one of the biggest opportunities for growth is to target a more traditional game audience with established game genres. Online games so far have been most widely represented by role-playing and first-person shooter products targeted towards an older, heavily male audience. Traditional sports products and games targeted towards a younger audience are really just getting started. In the long term, the audience for online games can be expected to start to mirror the more traditional game audience.
