OCT. 22, 2008 • The new PSP-3000 sold 141,270 units in its first four days on sale in Japan, according to Enterbrain. The second refresh of the platform went on sale on Oct. 16. Nintendo released it new DSi in Japan two weeks later on Nov. 1, and saw sales of 170,779 in its first two days, according to Enterbrain.
Impact: The PSP has had a very strong year in Japan. The new DSi was launched in response to slowing Japan sales for the original system. If it wasn’t for the massive success of the DS, people would be paying a lot more attention to the strong PSP sales. The DS has a very high installed base in Japan, but the PSP continues to gain momentum. We expect that this trend will start to occur on a global basis in 2009.
