Nvidia’s 3DTV Play
MARCH 15, 2010 • During a cross-promotion road trip with Panasonic touting new 3D televisions, Nvidia introduced its 3DTV Play software that allows any compatible Nvidia GeForce GPU-powered computer to connect to 3D TVs play high-definition 3D entertainment.
Impact: It seems consumer electronics manufacturers are primed to deluge the market with 3D televisions this year – Panasonic being one of the major backers of the new format. The problem is 3D is not much of a sell to the millions of consumers who upgraded to HD sets during the last 24 months. Talk of all-3D cable channels helps, but 3D TVs desperately need more content like games to sell better. That’s an opportunity for Nvidia, which already markets a line of high-quality 3D viewing glasses. While we think its a good marketing message for Nvidia in vying with ATI for core gamers, we question how many mainstream consumers will get the 3D message.
