Microsoft and LG Electronics Partner on 3D
MAY 11, 2010 • The Microsoft Ent. and Devices Division’s Asia Pacific division sealed a cross-promotion deal with LG Electronics to cross-promote 3D products in South Korea. The companies will set up Xbox 360/LG 3D TV demo stations in more than 1,000 retail locations, as well as at sporting events and special exhibitions.
Impact: Since CES in January, Sony has been making a lot of noise about 3D gaming and is rolling out PS3 firmware updates to make the consoles compatible with future 3D titles and Sony 3D televisions. As a natural marketing partner with Sony’s television division, SCE has somewhat of a strategic advantage given their 3D-capable TVs will ship with free 3D-capable PS3 games. This created a problem for Microsoft, as without a strong TV partner, 3D on the Xbox 360 might look like it is falling behind in the minds of consumers. Microsoft’s primary focus this year seems to be on Natal and motion-based gaming, however the company will likely move to sign agreements for the US and European markets if Sony’s 3D campaigns get more traction.
