iPad Unveiled
JAN. 27, 2010 • Long expected to announce a tablet computer, Apple Corp. unveiled its iPad. The device will retail in different configurations for between $499 and $829, and operates much like a larger, expanded version of the iPod Touch. Since the same operating system is used, the iPad can run existing iPhone apps on its 9.7-inch LED-backlit screen, although native iPad apps make better use of the screen. For connectivity, most users will have to rely on WiFi hotspots, or in more expensive versions, cellular networks. Apple hopes its iBookstore service will make the iPad a serious competitor for Amazon.com’s Kindle digital reader.
Impact: DFC thinks the iPad will have limited impact on the game market. The main thing to note is that it is an indication that Apple will continue to aggressively pursue the platform and devices market. More importantly Apple seems to have a strategy conducive to developers looking to go across multiple Apple devices by developing for a single operating system. The iPad as a device, does not seem to offer a great deal to gamers, but the moves of Apple now need to be closely monitored by the game industry.
