HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray
JUNE 11, 2007 • The HD-DVD Promotional Group reported the HD format was outselling Blu-ray dedicated players by 20% in the U.S. To date, 150,000 HD-DVD players have been sold. The Blu-ray equipped PlayStation 3 console was not included in the comparison. The group also said that HD DVD movie sales improved greatly during the last week of May, at more than 75,000 discs.
Impact: Next-generation video game systems remain the best driver for high-definition adoption by consumers. Sales on both platforms so far show that dedicated HD players have yet to provide consumers a compelling argument for investing in HD compared to the PS3, or the Xbox 360. According to the NPD Group, lifetime sales through April of the HD-DVD add-on drive for the Xbox 360 are 143,000.
