APRIL 7, 2010 • The Blu-ray Disc Association that manages the format has announced a higher capacity version called BDXL. The enhanced specification will take up 128GB of data, up from the current limit of 100GB.

Impact: While the trend in console games is away from huge titles toward more accessible experiences, ratcheting up the capacity of Blu-ray discs makes pirating them a more expensive proposition, which should give pirates less interest in knocking off PlayStation 3 titles.  Not when it is much less expensive to pirate Xbox 360 and Wii discs of smaller DVD-like capacity.
