iPad Moves 1 Million Units
APRIL 6, 2010 • The iPad sold more than 300,000 units its first day on sale in the United States, According to Apple Inc. Predictions were that the new tablet would move between 400,000 and 600,000 units. Yet the $499 iPad sold similarly to the iPhone, which racked up 270,000 units its first day on sale, and has since sold more than 42.5 million in the three years since. In its first month in release, the iPad went on to sell 1 million units, a milestone that took the iPhone 74 days to reach in 2007.
Impact: When looking at hot new products from companies like Apple it is hard to make any comments based on first month sales. The Apple fan base is large enough to drive significant hardware sales for almost any major new product. As far as the iPad, we think it is a nice device for reading books or taking notes in class. However, as far as a game playing device we don’t see it as having a major impact at this time. Nevertheless, we will be keeping a close eye on the overall game market for Apple platforms, particularly heading into the launch of the Apple Game Center for iPhone OS 4.0 later this year.
