Perfect World Buying Cryptic Studios
MAY 31, 2011 • It was announced that leading Chinese online game company Perfect World was buying Cryptic Studios from Atari for an estimated €35 million in cash. Among its other projects, Cryptic developed the hit MMOG City of Heroes for NCsoft and Star Trek Online for Atari.
Impact: DFC had said that Atari was no longer a large enough company to provide the ongoing support and updates that a major online game requires. Thus a company like Perfect World, which has roots in Asia and is looking to expand to North America and Europe is a much better fit. Not only do they have the expertise in online game delivery, they are much better capitalized than Atari.
