SEPT. 3, 2008 • PSP owners in Japan will get new connectivity enhancements this fall. According to SCE, the PSP will be able to access the PlayStation Store without having to be connected to a PS3. Users will still have to connect to the home console, however, if they want to take advantage of a new free service permitting them to play PSP titles against other players online. One of the first games to support the new service is Capcom’s Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. On Oct. 16, the new PSP-3000 will debut for ¥19,800 ($185).  The new model, featuring a high-contrast LCD screen and built-in microphone, will ship in white, silver and black versions.

Impact: Surprisingly connectivity for portable systems has never been a major deal.  It seems most users play each other when they are in the same location.  Having to connect to a home console, or even a home network, will limit the user base dramatically.  In short, Wi-Fi connectivity for portable systems is still a feature in progress, and is currently not a selling point for game systems.  However, the idea of a new PSP SKU with an improved LCD screen at a consumer friendly price is the type of feature that should help drive consumers to the PSP platform.
