76 Wii Titles Pass 1M Units
FEB. 25, 2010 • Nintendo reports that 76 Wii titles have surpassed 1 million units in sales, with 54 of those titles coming from third-party developers.
Impact: We were actually surprised to hear that ratio of 54 third-party titles and only 22 first-party titles on the best seller list. But on second glance there is a big difference between one million units, versus five, ten or even twenty million. Obviously Nintendo games like Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Fit as part of hardware bundle packages are selling twenty million plus units. Other Nintendo first party titles like New Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl are hovering in the ten million unit range. In today’s market, one million units on a platform can be close to breakeven if a title is not released for other systems. Of course, most titles, with reasonable budgets are able to turn a profit on sales of one million units. Nevertheless, our second glance look made us realize that in today’s market 54 titles selling one million units plus is not by itself a major third-party market.
