2 Million iPads Sold Since April
JUNE 1, 2010 • In less than 60 days since its April 3 launch more than 2 million iPads were sold at retail. Sales were mostly from the United States, although Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Switzerland saw their iPad launches in late May.
Impact: No console or handheld game system in the U.S. has ever sold 2 million units after 60 days from launch. While the iPad is in a different category of consumer electronics, it is still relevant as competition for attention among gamers as the major demographic of iPad purchasers is 25 to 44 aged males. This segment also overlaps with core gamers and adult gamers with small children who are already getting accustomed to iPhone gaming. It will take time for the iPad to emerge as a true gaming platform, however its reach into the space is growing and we will be watching it closely.
