JUNE 10, 2009 • Doom Resurrection for the iPhone was announced by id Software. The game was built from the ground up as an iPhone title in partnership with Escalation Studios, although it does make use of Doom 3 assets.  Doom Resurrection features its own parallel plot, and is designed to be fun, as well as challenging to existing fans of the franchise. The title is not to be confused with Doom Classic for the iPhone, which will be released as open source to encourage user-designed content.
Impact: The iPhone has jump-started interest in the mobile phone content category, which had shown potential but had been killed in the past by the lack of focus from the service providers and hardware manufacturers. It is ironic that an outsider like Apple could come in and so quickly solve many of the problems that had been plaguing mobile phones as content devices. Nevertheless, the mobile phone market is still in its infancy. DFC Intelligence is launching a series of reports around this space as we expect it to grow significantly over the next few years.Â
