FEB. 9, 2009 • EVE Online publisher CCP has decided to cease Linux support for the game, which was initiated at the same time as Mac support late in 2007. CCP said it has not seen the same steady growth as the Mac client, however. Linux support will be terminated on March 10.
Impact: Code compatibilities made it possible for CCP to support both the Mac and Linux. It is to CCP’s credit that both platforms were embraced when few publishers even support Apple’s resurgent Mac. Despite Windows Vista’s many detractors, Linux market share hasn’t seen growth the way many boosters had hoped. Given that many Linux users considered running the PC version of EVE in Linux via Wine was more pleasing than CCP’s own Linux client, the company’s decision to terminate the latter was a no-brainer.
