CD Projekt to Fine Witcher 2 Pirates

NOV. 20, 2010 • Fearing that its upcoming single-player RPG Witcher 2 will be a major piracy target, Polish publisher CD Projekt is signing on with legal firms in larger markets. Users whose accounts can be identified with an illegal download of the game will receive a letter demanding payment of a fine, or risk legal action. CD Projekt says the fine amount will be more than the retail price of the game, but hasn’t said how much. .....

NOV. 19, 2010 • OnLive began taking pre-orders for its TV-compatible OnLive micro console unit. For $99, consumers receive one OnLive wireless controller plus a $50 credit. Earlier in the year the firm scrapped its $14.95 paid subscription model that forced user to pay just for the privilege to buy titles. Mobile Ad Impressions

NOV. 18, 2010 • Independent mobile ad firm Millennial Media reported that in October both the iOS and Android platforms accounted for 37% of U.S. ad impressions. Blackberry systems came in at 20%. Ad impressions for the iOS grew 12% between September and October, while Android saw 65% growth for the same period. A large number of devices spread over numerous carriers was the primary reason for Android’s higher growth rate. .....

Android Not Ready for Netflix

NOV. 12, 2010 • Citing a lack of a generic or complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Google’s Android mobile phone system, Netflix disclosed it had no immediate plans to stream video content to all Android phones as it has with the iPhone or Windows Phone 7.  Netflix instead will work with the individual hardware manufacturers to to craft DRM solutions that will permit secure content streaming. .....

Viacom to Sell Harmonix

NOV. 12, 2010 • After reporting that its profit dropped 59% in the most recent quarter, Viacom Inc. said it would sell its Harmonix game division.  Harmonix is best known for creating the Rock Band franchise.  The music segment became over-saturated with sequels and related hardware by 2010, leading to declining consumer interest in such titles.
