New Microsoft Xbox Series X Announcements

New Microsoft Xbox Series X Announcements

On February 24, Xbox head Phil Spencer released a blog post with the latest on the Xbox Series X.  This was the latest in a trickle of new information about the upcoming game system.  Once again, this is line with what DFC believes is a solid strategy of slowly leaking information to an eager audience. The official Microsoft blog post contained little in the way of new information.....
When Will We Officially See the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?

When Will We Officially See the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?

The year is young, but we are already looking towards the upcoming holiday season. There has been a continuing drought in terms of new big-ticket games being released. Right now, it looks that the launch of new console systems this fall may not see much in the way of new product. This begs the question, do the new console systems even need games to be successful? Of course, that is a rhetorical question and the answer is of course the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X need games. However.....
Sony Stock Jumps as Game Revenue Declines

Sony Stock Jumps as Game Revenue Declines

On Monday February 3, Sony Corporation (NYSE: SNE) announced total revenue results that were flat, but down significantly in the video game division.  Ironically Sony stock rose on the news.  This was in sharp contrast to Nintendo that a few days before had seen its stock drop after reporting a significant revenue increase. The recent third fiscal quarter for Sony ended on December 31, 2019.  Overall revenue in the quarter was up 3% over Q3 2018.  However, net incom.....
Nintendo Sales Strong/ Stock Drops

Nintendo Sales Strong/ Stock Drops

Last week Nintendo announced its earnings for the nine months ending 12/31/2019.  As expected Nintendo sales were strong.  However, they were not strong enough to please investors who punished Nintendo stock. DFC Intelligence had forecasted a strong holiday season for the Nintendo Switch and it delivered.  For the second half of 2019, Switch hardware sales were up 31% over 2018.&nb.....

The figure released at the Sony CES press conference on January 7, 2020 was 1.15 billion through 2019 and 876 million through 2018.  In other words, the software sales figur.....
Major Video Game Announcements at CES 2020

Major Video Game Announcements at CES 2020

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is always the first show of the New Year.  This is an event more about the future than what is actually currently going on in the marketplace.  CES 2020, held in Las Vegas January 7 to January 10, was no exception. The video game industry rarely pays much attention to CES.  However, this is a show about hardware and there are always some goofy gadgets looking to take the game world by storm.  CES shows that Sony, Microsoft and Nin.....
Where are the Video Games for Holiday 2019?

Where are the Video Games for Holiday 2019?

The last three months of the year have historically been make or break time for the video game industry.  However, as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One slowly decline, 2019 is different. New offerings for the end of 2019 are sparse. Thankfully, in today’s market, the investment community has a better understanding of long-term industry trends.  There is surprisingly little panic. The latest DFC Intelligence brief l.....
The Failure of Google Stadia

The Failure of Google Stadia

When we had our first look at the Google Stadia streaming service at GDC in March 2019 we left uncertain. To us it was unimpressive, but we were told Google had more up its sleeve. Last week Google Stadia officially launched (we think) and it became clear the emperor has no clothes. Google Stadia is dead on arrival. I.....
