OCT. 14, 2010 • According to the Nielsen Co., Teens aged 13-17 are consuming a great deal more downloaded data on their smartphones, up to 14MB per month in 2009 to 62MB per month this year.
Impact: SMS texting has been the biggest activity on smartphones traditionally for teens but it does not consume high bandwidth, even for heavy users. Now it appears that smartphone games, with ever increasing rich media and sophistication, are adding significantly to monthly downloads and likely taking away share of time from texting activities. How much of that 62MB per month is game content is unknown, yet we view this data as supportive of the growing acceptance of games on mobile platforms. Let’s be honest, how much bandwidth can browsing for pizza parlors and downloading music account for? We view this bandwidth usage growth as evidence that more people are using more apps on their phones.
