OCT. 26, 2009 • Based on reports earlier this year that Netflix was working on support for game platforms other than the Xbox 360, the DVD rental firm announced that it would start delivering films via the PlayStation Network starting in November. PS3 owners who have a monthly $9 or higher Netflix subscription can stream the movies at no extra charge.
Impact: It is clear that Netflix is finding that based on its experience with the Xbox 360, game systems make a great vehicle for its streaming video rental ambitions. Obviously it makes sense for Netflix to be on as many platforms as possible to reach the largest audience. One notable difference is that, unlike with Xbox Live Gold, PlayStation Network users only need to pay a subscription fee to Netflix.
