SEPT. 2, 2008 • ScreenLife, developer of the Scene It movie game, is acquired by Paramount Digital Entertainment. Scene It is a trivia game where players identify film clips, and has sold more than 15 million units worldwide.
Impact: In the late 1990s, DFC Intelligence predicted the emergence of a major new type of video game genre we called the “post modern parlor game.” We thought quiz shows and the ability to interact with trivia and other game shows would be a major driver for interactive entertainment platforms. It never panned out to the extent we expected, however we still hold out hope. Scene It has done extremely well as a DVD-based trivia game. We think this type of game has even more potential on the high-end console systems. Microsoft released a version for the Xbox 360 in late 2007. Sony has the Buzz series of trivia contests for its console systems. Sales of these titles are not exactly through the roof. However, we still argue that products like Scene It have a much brighter future for the console systems.
