JULY 17, 2008 • As of June 30, the NPD Group reported that the Nintendo Wii had eclipsed the Xbox 360 to become the best selling current-generation console in the U.S. at 10.9 million units. Total U.S. sales of the DS were 20.8 million. June DS sales in the U.S. were 783,000, and Wii sales were 666,000.
Impact: The Wii is now firmly established as number one around the world. DFC only forecasts this lead to increase. The biggest question is how long can the DS continue on such a strong pace. In Japan, DS sales have started to slow and the Sony PSP has outsold the DS on a monthly basis the past few months. The DS remains very strong in Europe and North America, but will Japan trends emerge overseas?
