NOV. 6, 2007 • The creator of LEGO Star Wars: The Videogame, Traveller’s Tales (TT Games), is acquired by the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. The developer has been in operation since 1989, and boasts that its games have sold more than 42 million units worldwide. Traveller’s Tales holds the worldwide license to create LEGO video games. The first two LEGO Star Wars titles have sold more than 12 million units combined. Games in development include LEGO Batman: The Videogame, and LEGO Indiana Jones. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Impact: Traveller’s Tales has specialized in developing titles based on licensed media property, usually oriented towards a younger audience. Time Warner has announced its intention to stop licensing out its IP to third-party publishers like Electronic Arts and start developing games in-house based on its vast library of content. Clearly the acquisition of Traveller’s Tale is only the tip of the iceberg in that direction.
